Michael Weeks, explorer Teddy Tucker, Minister of Education Dame Jennifer Smith, and Minister of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy Walter Roban.

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute marked World Oceans’ Day yesterday by donating several educational DVDs to the Island’s schools. The DVDs all focus on Bermuda’s oceans, exploring the history and future of the Island’s waters, as well as the animals that call it home. The documentary ‘Keepers of the Reef’ focuses on human-induced and natural changes in coral reefs, while ‘Oceans in Motion’ targets the historical change in sea levels.‘Nightlife: Creatures of the Deep’ details the animals that live in deep waters near Bermuda and across the world, while ‘Teddy Tucker: Adventure is My Life’ tells the life story of the famous local adventurer.Minister of the Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy Walter Roban said that there was no better place for the DVDs than the Island’s schools and libraries, where students can have easy access to them.“It is so important for our young people to be engaged in what is going on around them in terms of our marine environment,” Mr Roban said. “After all, if you don’t fully appreciate the wonder, and at the same time, the vulnerability of something, why would you endeavour to protect it?“Personally, I find it humbling to observe the marine life harboured in our oceans. Watching ‘Nightlife: Creatures of the Deep’ for example, which showcases the beauty and complexities of creatures that we could only imagine, reminds us that we, as humans, are simply part of a wider chain of species, all interconnected, all dependent on one another for survival.”
