Greenrock is calling for walkers, runner and volunteers for an Earth Hour event that will highlight the importance of sustainability.

The 5k Glow Fun Walk and Run is scheduled for Saturday, March 19, starting and finishing at the Waterfront Properties. It will be the second year at that location.

Greenrock is encouraging participants to register as a team to help make a “symbolic statement to support a sustainable future for the island.”

The charity is also calling for volunteers to help facilitate their eco-schools programme after showing the successes at the “green flag” certified West Pembroke Primary School.

Students Ally Neocleous and Ajani Hill gave a presentation on their school’s progress within the initiative, both celebrating the positive results the school has earned through simple changes.

Ajani, 11, said: “The results revealed that WPS students and staff had reduced our electricity use by 2603 kWh since February, 2013 — an average of $1,500 a month. That’s enough energy to power seven 42-inch plasma TVs for a year.”

Ally, president of the school’s eco team, said they had carried out “trash audits” to monitor the amount of trash the school created, taking steps to minimise the amount.

She said: “West Pembroke School has reduced our trash by 17 pounds since November 2013. The majority of the waste identified was paper, that’s equal to 256 trees saved.”

The 12-year-old added: “The eco team established some ideal changes to reduce our trash consumption: composting fruit for the school garden, implementing a trash free lunch, teachers, staff and students were encouraged to print double-sided and recycle paper.”

It will be the second year the event will be held at Waterfront Properties, who will provide live entertainment with soups and snacks sponsored by Miles Market and a cash bar by Harry’s. It will run from 7pm to 11pm.

Kaitlyn Mulderig, events manager, said: “It’s a good opportunity for us to get people to our property and show our support for Greenrock, an amazing organisation.”

“We’re hope to meet close to 1,000 people this year.”
