Trees planted for Earth Day

An environmental group celebrated Earth Day yesterday with a tree-planting programme.

The Bermuda Climate Action Network said the reduction of travel and closure of factories in the fight against Covid-19 had resulted in an “environmental boon” with reduced pollution around the world.

A spokesman said: “It is the misfortune of the pandemic that has revealed what could happen with some wise policies across the globe, sensitive to the reality of balancing the economic needs with that of the ecology.

“Earth Day is a reminder of that legacy of accessing that wisdom.”

The spokesman said Earth Day was an opportunity to support the organisation's Vision 2020 initiative, in which it hopes to plant 2,020 new trees before the end of the year.

He said: “As we ‘Shelter in Place' until May 2, we might use some of this time to either germinate sees or seek out one or more seedling — in and around the half-mile radius of your home.

“That seedling could be an endemic or native or any fruit tree.”

The spokesman also urged the public to report their planting by e-mailing
