The Botanical Gardens got spruced up thanks to a volunteer effort by employees of the Bermuda Post Office.

The good deed was carried out in celebration of World Post Day, an annual observance which aims to raise awareness of the postal system’s role in the everyday lives of people and businesses.

This year's theme is “Post for Planet: Ensuring a Greener Planet for Future Generations”.

Sam Brangman Jr, the Postmaster-General, said: "Post offices are global players in the delivery of goods and essential services, and we are in a prime position to lead the way across the entire global supply chain.

"We should also bring awareness to the role that the postal service provides to the community for businesses and everyday citizens, which also helps to drive progress in social and economic development while keeping us sustainable.

"As the Bermuda Post Office revives its spirit of service and innovation with paperless products like MyBermudaPost, we will continue to support our community, help reduce carbon emissions and drive change."

Previous years’ efforts by the Bermuda Post Office have included cleaning nursing homes, reading stories to nursery schoolchildren, preparing food and delivering meals for the charity Meals on Wheels.

Wayne Furbert, the Minister for the Cabinet Office, said: "As the minister responsible for the Post Office, I'm very proud of the spirit of philanthropy and creativity that our postal and parks teams provide.

"I do not doubt that cleaning our cherished Botanical Gardens will be noticeable and appreciated by the public."
