A derelict vessel was found on the rocks in the East End on Tuesday.

Keep Bermuda Beautiful speculated on its LinkedIn page that the handbuilt watercraft could have drifted to Bermuda from Cuba and might have been used by refugees.

The charity said that research into the history of the abandoned vessel has commenced.

Its LinkedIn post read: “Obviously this watercraft has been tossed around and damaged by the power of the sea, but we wonder what caused it to become abandoned in the first place.

“What’s the story of the occupants of this vessel and what became of them? Sadly, we will probably never learn the details behind this vessel’s journey or how it came to its final resting place on the rugged coastline of the gem of the Atlantic.”

According to the post, vessels, both in and beyond Bermuda’s waters, can be found abandoned for many reasons, including neglect, storm damage or marine accidents.

The charity is clearing away wrecked and derelict vessels across the island through its abandoned boats project. It removed 50 watercraft from the sea as of the end of last year.
