A senior official with the United Arab Emirates Government is in Bermuda with representatives from the Middle Eastern business hub for the Climate Summit.

Abdulaziz Alnuaimi, assistant undersecretary to the UAE Minister of Economy, is leading the delegation and will deliver the keynote address tomorrow at the second and final day of the summit at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.

Officials were invited by David Burt as part of a move to build stronger ties with the UAE.

The Premier said the occasion marked a chance to explore potential areas of collaboration with the island.

Joint efforts could range from renewable energy and the blue economy ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled for November and December in Dubai, the most populous city of the UAE.

Other partnerships could include infrastructure and tourism development, and expanding UAE engagement with Bermudian-based insurers.

Mr Alnuaimi brings more than a decade’s experience spanning the UAE, Brazil, Japan, Britain and the United States.

As assistant undersecretary, Mr Alnuaimi has led and advised strategic partnerships aimed at unlocking UAE's wealth and leveraging global expertise.

The Government said his skill in sovereign wealth investment and private equity would prove valuable.

Mr Burt’s invitation was said to underscore the Government’s commitment to diversifying the economy and broadening investment opportunities.

The proposal is aimed at building stronger relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, a regional political and economic union.

Welcoming the delegates, Mr Burt said: “Their visit is an opportunity to strengthen the ties between Bermuda and the UAE.

“The Government looks forward to the delegation's presence at the Bermuda Climate Summit, including the keynote address from His Excellency, and productive meetings in which we will discuss areas where our two jurisdictions can work together.”

The Climate Summit was said to be testament to the island’s commitment to climate resilience and sustainability, with the Bermuda Government confident that collaboration and investment opportunities in the field could be developed with the UAE.

The delegation will also hold meetings with government ministers and private sector leaders on areas of mutual interest.
