Public get their say in future of Southlands
The public can offer feedback on the preservation and improvements to an extensive Warwick park.
The Ministry of Public Works and Environment launched a consultation on the Southlands Park Management Plan today.
The document contains proposals to improve public access and restore buildings at the 37-acre park, and identifies areas that could support community gardens or nature trails.
An application submitted by the Department of Public Lands and Buildings last month proposed developing a café with indoor and outdoor seating and a parking lot at the property while another plan suggested installing a series of zip lines.
The Government acquired the property in 2012 and it was designated an amenity park five years later.
Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, said: “I understand that the idea of enhancements at Southlands Park is a matter of concern to some residents.”
The minister added: “While enhancing this one park remains a complex issue, it is important to consider the broader context.
“This Government continues to take active steps to preserve open space across Bermuda, including protecting other sites through conservation zoning and environmental stewardship.”
He said he believed that the Government could improve public access and education at the park while preserving its beauty and historical significance.
A statement added: “The ministry remains committed to ensuring Southlands remains a tranquil and ecologically sensitive space for all to enjoy.
“Residents’ voices are a critical part of that process.”
Residents can view and provide feedback on the plan via forum.gov.bm, or deliver written submissions to the Department of Parks headquarters on Church Street between 9am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
No final decisions about the park will be made without feedback, which must be submitted by August 12.
