DENR to destroy old explosives at government quarry
Noise or smoke from a Hamilton Parish quarry may be heard as old explosive materials are destroyed, the Government warned residents.
The controlled disposal operations will be conducted at the Government Quarry today and tomorrow between 9am and 2pm.
The low-risk operation, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Environment, will be overseen by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
A ministry spokesman explained that the operation would involve controlled burns and would target expired explosive materials and detonators.
He said these disposals would be carried out in accordance with internationally recognised safety standards.
The spokesman added: “Like a small firework or controlled burn, any noise or smoke produced during the operation will be minimal, short-lived and contained entirely within the quarry site.
“These operations are unlikely to be heard outside the quarry boundaries and no disruption to nearby residents or businesses is expected. Public safety remains the highest priority.
“The disposal process has been carefully reviewed and approved to ensure that it presents no risk to the surrounding community or environment.
“The Ministry of Public Works and Environment thanks the public for their understanding and co-operation as these essential safety operations are carried out.”
