‘Routine’ disposal of explosives at government quarry

The routine controlled disposal of old explosives continues at the government quarry in Hamilton Parish, the Ministry of Public Works and Environment has advised.

The operations to be conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will not affect residents or businesses, a spokesman said.

A “safe, environmentally approved method” for disposing of expired explosive materials will continue through April 2026.

The spokesman said the “low-risk process” would be carried out by trained professionals following internationally recognised safety standards.

The disposal uses small, controlled burns to destroy expired material, alongside controlled destruction of detonators.

“Tests and demonstrations have been carried out to ensure any noise or smoke produced during the operation is minimal, short-lived and contained entirely within the quarry site,” the spokesman said.

The ministry thanked the public, adding that the disposal process was carefully reviewed to ensure no risk to the surrounding community or environment.
