A free information session about invasive fire ants will be held next week in the wake of their discovery in Bermuda.

The event, organised by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, will feature a presentation from visiting fire ant specialist Noel Tawatao of the UK-based Fera Sciences Ltd.

Mr Tawatao, who has previously helped island communities in Montserrat, the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla respond to fire ant incursions, will talk about identification, risks, control techniques and lessons learnt from other jurisdictions.

It was revealed last month that three ant mounds of red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, had been located and wiped out.

The insects, which can cause painful stings and are known to disrupt electrical communications network, are considered among the most destructive invasive species in the world.

Geoff Smith, director of DENR, said: “Since the confirmation of fire ants in Bermuda, DENR has been moving quickly to assess the situation, manage the threat and ensure that the public is fully informed.

“Mr Tawatao’s regional experience will support our efforts and provide valuable insight for anyone who wants to better understand this issue.”

Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and the Environment, added: “Fire ants present real risks to our environment, agriculture and public safety.

“I am pleased that DENR has taken swift, proactive steps by bringing in an international expert. I encourage residents to come out, learn more and ask questions so that we can work together to limit the spread of this invasive species.”

The lecture will take place from 6pm to 7pm on December 11 at Bermuda College’s North Hall. Seating will be done on a first-come, first-served basis with standing room offered once seats are filled.

Members of the public are reminded that suspected fire ant activity should be reported by sending photographs and location details to fireants@gov.bm.

The public are also advised not to disturb or handle suspected mounds.
