Chicken traps now available through Government
A means of catching feral chickens is up for purchase as part of recently announced measures to address the invasive birds.
A spokesman for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said chicken traps can be bought at the Agriculture Service Centre on School Drive in Devonshire, for $100 each.
Only one trap is permitted per residential property, with written guidance on use provided with purchase — detailing appropriate locations, how often baited traps must be checked and procedures for reporting trapped birds.
The community can learn more about control measures and report sightings of feral chickens online at www.gov.bm/feralchickens.
Resources include guidance on requests for feral chicken assistance, the Feral Chicken Management Plan and access to a Feral Bird Management Dashboard giving the locations and timelines of control activities across the island.
Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and Environment, recently told the House of Assembly that the invasive birds were threatening crops, disturbing public areas and potentially creating a public health risk.
While he said the DENR removes more than 1,300 of the birds a month, the scale of the problem exceeds the department’s capacity.
In addition to making 100 traps available for purchase, he told the House the DENR would hire additional contractors and release an app to monitor sightings.
