A hunting trip down to Tobacco Bay in search of invasive lionfish is among several outdoor experiences featured in an episode of a US travel show.

Actor David Moscow, the host of the documentary series From Scratch, explores the island for an episode that will be aired on the Peacock network later this month.

The programme, filmed in December, was organised by The Loren at Pink Beach.

Andre Roberts, the director of food and beverage operations at The Loren, said the episode “was quite a collaboration of locals; we had farmers, the lionfish hunting community and fishermen. It was great”.

He explained that, as the name of the show suggests, the host went out in search of the ingredients for two meals, which were prepared by the hotel from scratch.

The episode features a hunting trip in which Mr Moscow accompanies divers Natalie and Tim Price, a married couple who are part of the lionfish hunting community on the island.

“We’ve been doing it for quite a few years now,” Ms Price said of the couple’s lionfish hunting experiences.

She and her husband accompanied Mr Moscow one morning to the waters off Tobacco Bay in St George’s where they were hunted and caught a lionfish.

Ms Price provided the host with insights about the hunting and told him about the fish’s venomous spines.

“They are tricky to find,” Ms Price told the host on screen, explaining that the species is usually found under reefs and in the caves around the island.

“The best time to dive for them is at sunrise or sunset,” Mr Price added.

Ms Price warned about the 18 venomous spines on the lionfish’s back as she explained the art of spearing them.

The trio then descended into the water and after a period of no luck, Mr Price pulled up the fish.

Ms Price pointed out that by law, visitors to the island are not permitted to hunt for lionfish.

The episode features a sit down with Mr Moscow for a lionfish meal, which was prepared by Lawrence Godinho, the executive chef at The Loren.

Mr Godinho prepared a dish made up of lionfish ceviche, avocado purée and fried plantains.

“My oh my, that is wonderful,” Mr Moscow said after sampling the delicacy.

The show also featured Mr Moscow on a lobster-hunting trip with Nick New, a local commercial fisherman.

The two circled the waters of the island and later pulled up several traps with lobsters. Mr Moscow was featured later in the show cooking the crustacean with Mr Godinho.

Mr Moscow was offered tours of a few farms, including Greg Wilson’s regenerative farm Food Forest in Somerset.

He also visited Yard Farm in Smith’s, where the host was offered a tour by Beth and Jason Hollis of their organic farm. He also visited Tom Wadson’s farm in Southampton.

Mr Roberts said the hotel believed that the episode “was a great way to showcase the island”.

After the episode is aired, The Loren intends to promote a “From Scratch” experience in which guests will be invited to explore the island for the ingredients to prepare meals.
