The Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce has named Gloria Simmons as the second recipient of its Stuart Hayward Internship.

The scholarship programme was created to support recent graduates, helping them build connections within the island’s environmental community and gain hands-on experience.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: “Ms Simmons will work part-time as a junior environmental technician in phase 2 of the integrated water management initiative, a collaborative effort between BEST and Koom Consulting.

“One of her tasks will be to build on the pivotal work carried out by the previous awardee, Justus Anderson in phase 1 of the project, consisting of the analysis of key data concerning the sustainability of Bermuda’s water and wastewater infrastructures.

“She will also be taking on the important role of assisting with the development of key multidisciplinary strategies, geared towards addressing some of the socio-environmental challenges identified in phase 1.”

The programme was named in honour of BEST founder Stuart Hayward, a well-known environmental activist who led campaigns to protect green spaces across the island.
