Parking in an area of Reid Street will be restricted on Sunday as the Corporation of Hamilton works to remove five trees.

A City spokeswoman said that the trees set for removal east of Court Street, near the former Canadian Hotel, “have caused significant disruption to the surrounding sidewalk and road surface due to root heaving, creating safety and maintenance concerns”.

Removal of white cedar, false ebony, mahoe and French oak trees will start at 7am tomorrow and traffic in the area may be impacted.

The spokeswoman added: “In keeping with the City’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing its urban green spaces, the removed trees will be replaced with a selection of false ebony and mahogany trees.

“These will be installed alongside appropriate root guard systems to help prevent future infrastructure damage.”

City carpenters will transform the removed trees into benches, tables and other furniture once the timber is cured.

The spokeswoman explained: “This programme, led by parks superintendent Steven DeSilva, has saved the City tens of thousands of dollars in materials and labour costs in recent years while also reducing environmental impact.”

She added that eight new trees, with species including mahoe, brachychiton, false ebony and mahogany, have been planted along King Street after work last year to “address similar sidewalk disruptions caused by tree roots”.

The City thanked members of the public for their co-operation as the works are carried out.
