Spawning grounds to close to fishers

Conservation measures: Red Hind and Black Grouper spawning grounds to the southwest and northeast of the island will close from Wednesday until August 15. Extended protection areas outlined in red will close until December 1.

Spawning grounds for Red Hind and Black Grouper will be closed to fishers from Wednesday.

The seasonally protected areas will be closed from Wednesday until August 15, but extended closure areas for key Black Groupers will remain closed until December 1.

“The closure is intended to protect Red Hind and Black Grouper during their spawning period, when these species are particularly vulnerable,” a government statement said.

“This annual measure forms part of Bermuda’s fisheries management efforts to help protect important reef fish stocks and support the long-term health of the marine environment.“
