A local farmer is entering four young pigs in the Agricultural Exhibition next week.

Daniel Renaud, of DR Farms, received a Duroc, two Chester White and one Duroc Chester White pig from Pennsylvania in January.

He explained: “I have two males and two females, they were three months old when we brought them in, now the males are probably more than 300 pounds.”

Mr Renaud previously owned pigs about ten years ago and said a lot of regulations and money is required to keep the animals, who have been absent from the exhibition in recent years.

He explained: “You have to be registered to have pigs and go through all the paperwork to get that done — everybody wants them at the exhibition for those three days, but the rest of the year nobody wants them in their neighbourhoods.”

Mr Renaud added: “Food insecurity means that, unfortunately, you have to put up with the smell of animals and things of that nature sometimes.”

Mr Renaud will keep the animals after the event from April 23 to 25 and looks forward to watching them grow.
