Residents have been invited to take part in several sustainability activities at Victoria Park next week to mark Earth Day.

Eugene Dean, the executive director of Greenrock, said the event — which will be hosted collaboratively by Greenrock and partners — will run from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday.

He added: “This year we have managed to pull together a number of community leaders, environmental organisations, schools, local farmers and some government departments to host an Earth Day celebration. We are encouraging people to come out during their lunch hour.”

He said attendees will also gain more information on how to build raised bed and small backyard gardens.

Mr Dean said: “The idea is that we’re creating an experience where people can come to learn things they can do to live more sustainably.

“To spend more in the environment, to show appreciation for the environment and engage in activities that keep us in harmony with the natural world.”

He added: “The current geopolitical situation in the world has caused a lot of uncertainty.

“We have traded resilience for convenience and comfort and as a result we find ourselves very dependent in ways that we were not before.

“Our campaign this year that has run from Earth Hour to Earth Day is really focused on food security because we find ourselves very food insecure.

“We’re hoping experiences like this can encourage us to get more into practices that rebuild resilience that we once had by producing our own food and being in control of our own food source.”

Kathia Roberts, an organiser attached to Greenrock, said the events include “connecting” with the Earth’s elements and sound meditation sessions.

She said: “We’re all about sustainability and bringing community together and living in a natural way.

“We’ll have quite a few vendors here and we would love to invite you and your family and schools.”

Dr Roberts said that attendees will learn more about “sustainable farming and sustainable living”, while The St David's Islanders and Native Community will offer information on traditional practices on honouring the Earth.
