A limit of 175 recreational lobster diver licences is to remain in place as fishing season for the popular catch opens on September 1.

The Ministry of Public Works and Environment has confirmed that the cap, introduced several years ago, would continue through the 2026-27 season to “support the sustainable management of Bermuda’s spiny lobster population”.

The ministry said recreational lobster diver licences would not be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications, which do not guarantee licences, will be taken online from 5pm on Friday until midnight on August 23.

Divers licensed for the 2025-26 season must have submitted their catch statistics, including nil catches, by April 30 last year to qualify for relicensing.

Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail on August 24.

Selected applicants must visit the Department of Environment and Natural Resources offices at the Botanical Gardens in Paget to complete paperwork and pay for their licences by 4.30pm on August 28.

Successful applicants who are overseas during the application process can nominate someone to pay on their behalf.

The nominee must bring the diver’s licence card to receive the season’s sticker. If a new card is needed, the diver must appear in person to have their photograph taken before fishing.

Any unpaid licences by 4.45pm on August 28 will be reallocated, and successful applicants will be notified on August 31.
