Victoria’s Secret achieves lifetime best as times heat up
Cindy Mayeaux was overwhelmed with joy after watching her mare, Victoria’s Secret, set a lifetime best during the latest harness racing meet at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre.
The Indiana-bred pony posted a 1:06/2 with driver and former owner Candyce Martins in the bike on the way to victory in the second heat and simultaneously getting a leg out of the 1:07/1-1:08/3 time bar.
“When they announced the time I was jumping up and down like she had won a million dollars,” Mayeaux told The Royal Gazette.
“I am so excited and thrilled. She’s the youngest in the barn and we are bringing her along slowly. She has not gone from one time bar straight through to almost the Free for Alls. She’s come up slowly but surely.
“She went from a 1:08, did a 1:07/4 and then did a 1:06/2, so two seconds is a lot for a pony and I’m just exhilarated and thankful.
“Candyce has really done well with her since she’s come to Bermuda and has come a long way with her.”
Moving up a time bar were Belhaven Stables gelding Kool The Fire and Catrina Stephens’ mare Gold Legacy.
Kool The Fire and driver DJ Burchall got both legs out of the 1:07/1-1:08/3 division, while Gold Legacy and driver Marissa Stephens achieved the feat in the 1:08/4-1:12/4 time bar.
Getting a leg out of the 1:12/3 and slower time bar was Belhaven Stables gelding Iron Mike with rookie driver Kaleb Camara.
Tieing their fastest time and earning a share of the day’s fastest time (1:02) was Simsfield Stables gelding, Red October, with driver Philip Correia in the Free for All division.
“I have been doing extra training to get him built up and the results are starting to show,” owner Aaron Sims said.
“I think he’s starting to come into his prime of the race season at this point, so hopefully we should see some better times.”
Fellow gelding Smart Machine and driver/trainer Martins won the first Free for All heat in 1:02/2 but were denied the sweep after finishing runner-up to Red October in the second.
Recording sweeps in the Junior Free for All division were Teshi Zuill and Maurice Raynor at the helm of geldings Somegoldsomewhere and Rockeyed Optimist respectively.
“Rockeyed Optimist performed really well and ended up winning both heats,” Raynor said. “It was a great feeling to secure the wins.”
Zuill added: “It doesn’t really feel like anything too special since I had the advantage in both races on the rail because I was racing a rookie [Xanaje Degraff], but my pony still felt good and I am proud of him.”
Harness racing continues on Saturday at the Vesey Street racetrack, beginning at 6pm.
