Tributes and storytelling celebrate women at East End
The Olde Towne blossomed with a celebration of “women, culture and connection” at the second annual Herstory Festival in St George’s on Saturday.
The free, family-friendly day, hosted by the Women’s Resource Centre and curated by Kristin White of the gift shop and tour centre Long Story Short, brought an afternoon of entertainment, workshops, storytelling and cultural tours telling the stories of notable female figures such as Sally Bassett and Dame Lois Browne-Evans.
Quinell Francis, the Mayor of St George, opened the event, held in recognition of Women’s History Month, while area MP Renée Ming spoke on the value of women telling their stories and supporting one another.
Ms White said St George’s was selected not only for its historical significance but its strong network of female leaders, business owners and entrepreneurs.
Attendees enjoyed performances by singer-songwriter Aalai, Bermuda Idol winner DeMara Maybury and violinist Naphisa Smith, with a closing performance by Olivia Hamilton — who was joined on stage by Winter, a young attendee.
Readings included local author Cheyra Bell’s account of her mental health journey, while journalist Jasmine Patterson hosted the “She Made History” dialogue series on the experiences of Bermudian women who forged paths in their respective fields.
Among the speakers was Carika Weldon, the founder and chief executive of CariGenetics, who told of her journey as a scientist and entrepreneur, including leading Bermuda through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chelsea Warren, entrepreneur and founder of Uptimum Bodied, spoke about building a purpose-driven fashion brand while carrying her vision forward through grief.
Cathy Duffy, an insurance trailblazer, reflected on leadership, perseverance and building a successful career while raising children in a traditionally male-dominated field.
Sophia Greaves, a director at Conyers Dill & Pearman, told of her experiences leading to her nomination as a 2026 honouree at the Hamilton Princess Black History Month Celebration Dinner and the 2026 WiRe Woman of the Year.
Juanae Crockwell, the executive director of the Women’s Resource Centre, said the festival had been created to honour women and highlight the WRC’s work while bringing joy to the community.
The WRC thanked the festival’s lead sponsor, the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation, as well as the Corporation of St George’s and the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
