Silver surfers offered digital-confidence boosting classes
Digital skills classes have been launched for people aged 50 and older.
Age Concern Bermuda and Connectech Coding teamed up to start their digital confidence series.
The new hands-on classes will help people to build practical skills, stay connected and be safer online.
They launched today and run until December 10, with sessions on various dates to choose from.
“Device Basics” will help people become more comfortable navigating devices, adjusting useful settings, connecting to wi-fi, using applications, creating stronger passwords and protecting personal information.
Guidance on using e-mail, messaging apps and video calls will be offered in “Staying Connected”, with advice also to be offered on managing privacy and recognising suspicious links or impersonation scams.
The third class — “Everyday Digital Life” — will provide support to find reliable information, navigate useful websites, complete online forms, manage appointments and use digital services more safely.
Internet safety, scams and fraud prevention are all incorporated in all three topics so participants learn how to use technology and also how to recognise warning signs and protect their personal, account and payment information.
Mercedes Pringle-DeSilva, the executive director of Age Concern Bermuda, said: “Technology now plays an important role in how people access information, communicate with loved ones and complete everyday tasks.
“The digital confidence series is about meeting older adults where they are and providing practical, patient support that helps them feel more informed, connected, independent and secure online.”
Classes take place at Connectech, on the fourth floor of Sofia House, 48 Church Street.
Participants, who were encouraged to bring the device on which they would like to learn along with its charger, do not need to attend every topic and can select the classes most relevant to them.
