Wollmann turns attention to Red Bull squad

New challenge: Wollmann, who has qualified for the Rio Olympics, has set her sights on making Bermuda's Red Bull Youth America's Cup team

Cecilia Wollmann did her chances of being selected for Bermuda’s Red Bull Youth America’s Cup team no harm after qualifying for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio.

The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club sailor qualified at last month’s Sailing World Cup in Miami, where she secured the sole remaining spot from the North American region in the women’s Laser Radial.

Wollmann has now set her sights on making Bermuda’s Youth America’s Cup team which will compete against other youth teams from around the world in the wing-sail foiling AC45F catamaran next summer.

“That’s my next goal now; just trying to get stronger and fitter and trying and make it onto that team,” said Wollmann, who is among the remaining 30 candidates trying out for the squad. “It would be nice to represent Bermuda in Bermuda.

“The boats [AC45F] are so cool. we’ve been out training and watched the Oracle and Artemis guys go out and you can hear the boats. They are so fast, it’s crazy.”

The 18-year-old took part in a team fitness combine last December just before travelling to Malaysia to compete in the Youth Sailing World Championships.

“That’s the only [combine] I have been able to do,” Wollmann said. “I have been away during all the other ones.

“It was quite hard. It wasn’t as long as I thought it was.

“But for the times we had to be working it was very tough working out.”

Wollmann is thrilled that Bermuda will host the 35th America’s Cup next summer.

“It’s such an awesome opportunity for Bermuda,” she said. “Everyone is seeing how great of a place it is to sail, so hopefully we get more and more regattas down here.”

Wollmann will be kept very busy over the upcoming months as she prepares for the Rio Olympics while also training for Bermuda’s Youth America’s Cup team.

“I have lots more training ahead and I’m going to do a few more regattas,” she said.

“I really need to reorganise because I wasn’t sure if I was going to qualify, so I wasn’t sure how much I could organise ahead.

The Bermuda Red Bull Youth America’s Cup selection committee hopes to identify a squad of 18 of the best sailors and athletes who, with intensive training and coaching, will be equipped to compete with the world’s best young sailors in foiling high-performance catamarans.

The final racing team will consist of six Red Bull Youth America’s Cup squad members, with others supporting as training partners and a shore team.
