Family first for brothers in Red Bull battle

Brothers in arms: Danny Pell, left, and his brother Nicholas are in the Team Bermuda squad

They are both desperate to play central roles as Bermuda prepare to take on some of the best young sailors in the world in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.

But 22-year-old Danny Pell and his brother, Nicholas, 19, are adamant that they will not push each other out of the way in an attempt to get a place in the final six, they will do it together and support each other fully.

“There is potential for both of us to get on the boat,” Danny said. “We could be grinders or bowmen, there is no reason why we cannot both be on the boat.

“We are now part of a team, it is about working together, to get the best out of each other to make sure we get the best team. We are working for one another now.”

The brothers are part of 15-strong Team BDA squad which will compete in the Red Bull event in the Great Sound next June, using the AC45Fs that were used in the Louis Vuitton World Series event in Bermuda last year. The team is made up of sailors and athletes.

The boys’ parents, Sue and Andy Pell said they were immensely proud of their sons when they were selected as athletes after a gruelling selection process.

“When we came back to Bermuda I said one of the great things is that there are lots of opportunities,” Sue said. “If you were in a bigger country you probably would not get near something like this.

“Danny and Nicholas did it so that they could push one another, both at home and in the gym. Nicholas is away at college so they Skype each other to find out what training they had done. They were sending each other ideas and supporting each other.”

The brothers are now gearing up for some intensive training which begins next month and involves more than 40 days of gruelling physical skills and technical exercises.

Next year, six youth crews will compete in Bermuda through their affiliation with the America’s Cup teams.

Up to ten additional teams will be selected by Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher, the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup directors, before the end of November this year.

They will then race in a qualifying series to determine the top eight who will face off in two days of fleet racing scheduled during the week between the America’s Cup Finals.
