We are putting a band together. Want in?

Bermuda’s best musicians are being sought to make up a band to play at various events during the 35th America’s Cup this year.

An open audition call will be held next Saturday, between 9am and 5pm at Earl Cameron Theatre, City Hall. Auditions are open to residents of Bermuda who are at least 16-years-old. Round two will be held the following day at the same location for those who make it through to the finals.

This is one of two major entertainment initiatives of the America’s Cup, which is also calling for all existing local bands, solo musicians and entertainers of all kinds to register to play in the America’s Cup Village during the month-long event.

The Band is in addition to existing local talent scheduled for the America’s Cup Village, supplementing the local talent programme.

“The Band is my brainchild and a project I am very excited about,” said Sancha Durham, the Event and Business Support Co-ordinator for the America’s Cup Event Authority. “It’s an opportunity for local musicians to be a part of the band to play at various America’s Cup events next year and directly benefit from America’s Cup.”

Ms Durham said auditions will be open to the public and amateur musicians are encouraged to audition along with professionals. She also called this is an opportunity for anyone and everyone who is a musician to come out and audition to be a part of The Band.

“We’re asking for each contestant to prepare three pieces for the audition. The panel of judges will narrow down the audition pool and those finalists will be asked back for a final audition the following day, January 15.

“Another important thing that potential contestants should know is that the auditions will not have an audience. Only the panel of judges will be in the room during the auditions so those who might be nervous should feel better knowing that they aren’t performing in front of a crowd in this round.”

Musicians are asked to register their interest and will be given a time slot to audition. Registration is available on www.acbda.bm.

Walk-ins will be welcomed on the day and will be served on a first come, first served basis after the scheduled audition slots. No one will be allowed in the audition space aside from the judges and the contestants.

The finalists will be narrowed down and the public will then vote online for their favourite finalists to make up the band. Public voting begins on January 18, and the band will be announced on February 3.
