Austria and Spain join Bermuda as debutants

Bermuda will not be the only Youth America’s Cup debutants this year

Bermuda will not be the only team making their debut in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in June.

Organisers have announced the 12 teams — which include Austria and Spain, who, like host nation Bermuda, are making their first appearance in the competition.

The full field consists of Candidate Sailing Team (Austria), Team Bermuda, Youth Vikings Denmark, Team France Jeune, Next Generation — Team Germany, Land Rover BAR Academy, Kaijin Team Japan, Spanish Impulse Team, Artemis Youth Racing, Team Tilt (Switzerland), Next Generation USA and NZL Sailing Team, the defending champions.

The aim of the Youth America’s Cup is to provide sailors ages 19 to 25 with a pathway to the America’s Cup. So far, eight sailors from the inaugural Youth America’s Cup held in San Francisco in 2013 have secured positions on America’s Cup boats for this year’s main event in Bermuda. They include Peter Burling and Blair Tuke who were members of the victorious NZL Sailing Team with Emirates Team New Zealand.

The Youth America’s Cup will take place on the Great Sound from June 12 to 21.

The teams will be divided into two qualifying groups of six with the top four from each group advancing to the finals. The qualifiers will be held from June 12 to 16 and the finals June 20 to 21.

The next Youth America’s Cup will involve teams competing in the same AC45F foiling catamaran used for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series.

“It’s going to be exciting to see the racing this time around with the added dimension and speed of foiling,” Roman Hagara, the Youth America’s Cup sport director, said.

Bermuda’s entry was announced in July 2015 and the team are being supported by Oracle Team USA, the defenders of the America’s Cup.

“For Oracle Team USA to back the Bermuda team created an incredible opportunity for us,” Emily Nagel, the Team Bermuda sailor, said. “Now it’s up to us to put our heads down, work hard and show the world what we’ve got.”

Team Bermuda, who are being coached by multiple Olympian Richard Clarke, are now on a full-time training schedule which includes sessions in the GC32 catamaran.

The Youth America’s Cup teams will announce their six-member squads in May.
