Whether you’re headed out for a romantic meal or a last-minute movie date, Valentine’s Day is a bona fide opportunity to show off your ... love for fashion? You bet it is.

Lifestyle asked a handful of women — and one very savvy man — to pick which of our three favourite Valentine’s looks suited them best.

Thomas Olunloyo said he would choose a smart-casual look, and liked the outfit Pharrell Williams was wearing in the photo we showed him.

“I like the vest and the combination of that with the pocket square, which isn’t something you see very often,” the 32-year-old actuary said. “It’s the perfect mixture of classic and modern for Valentine’s Day, and the pink dress shirt does also work well with the theme of the day.”

Mr Olunloyo described his typical style as simple and a little old-fashioned.

“I’m most comfortable in a suit, I may have been born wearing one,” he said. “A good fit is also important so I prefer to get my clothes tailored whenever possible.”

He gets inspiration from everything around him, but particularly from styles popularised in the 1950s and ‘60s.

“I’m a big fan of Mad Men,” he said. “But I‘m not necessarily into trends. [For me] it’s important to define my own style rather than trying to keep up with what’s in fashion.

“Style is very personal, you have to be bold and willing to experiment with different ideas to find out what is the best expression of who you are. Most importantly, be comfortable.”

Accountant Tifa Han, 27, said the classic and feminine look we showed her was ideal.

“I like this outfit because the red colour says Valentine’s Day and the statement necklace is wonderful,” she said. “It’s feminine and I like the slightly retro style of the skirt. She is also dressing it up with an animal-print clutch and keeping it fun.

“I wouldn’t wear something with a lot of ruffles or too many layers, just something with a nice silhouette is what I typically go for. I watch a lot of fashion shows and read Vogue for added inspiration. I look at websites for major brands and see what I can use from their look books.”

Gina Astwood, 43, prefers the look of stylist and fashion blogger Ashleigh H for date night because “it pops out”.

“I like the purse. It’s in a colour I love, red, which also happens to be the appropriate colour for Valentine’s Day,” the banker said. “It’s also classic and I like that.”

Ms Astwood tries to mix up her style during the week.

“I try to be more modest when I’m dressing for work and on a weekday my look is more ‘diva-ish’. I try to be more daring and ultra-feminine. I get inspired by watching Jeannie Mai, who is on The Real every day. I love her style. It’s colourful and she never looks the exact same.

“She switches it up a lot by wearing pants, a suit or skirt. Her hair could be either in an up or down style and her make-up is always different.”

Retail assistant Chelsea Cooke, 22, liked the casual and edgy look worn by British model Cara Delevingne.

“The accessories are awesome and I like that they maintain one colour,” she said. “The look is mostly neutral with the black then the shirt adds in lots of other colours. The red lipstick matches the top.”

Miss Cooke gravitates towards colourful, loud pieces.

“When I say loud I mean something that looks noticeable, more through the colours,” she said. “You will always find me in something plain or neutral but I will pair it with something colourful — a jumper, scarf or trousers in a bold shade.”

She often finds inspiration through her job at AS Cooper’s Express, and from browsing social media.
