There seems to be one rule of thumb when it comes to packing for a vacation: keep it simple.

That is the word from the well-dressed people who spoke to Fashion On The Street this week.

Mariangela Bucci said she tended to pack a lot of white clothes because they look great with sun-kissed skin.

“I also make sure to pack a good moisturiser and statement jewellery so you can keep everything else nice and simple,” she said.

The 22-year-old describes her style as “corporate but European”.

“That means a lot of monotone pieces and things that are timeless, so not trendy,” she explained.

“I like to wear my clothes as much as possible and not just for one season.

“I get inspired just walking down the street in any European country.

“I used to live in Paris and that changed my style a lot. It’s very effortless over there.

“No one tries too hard and there is fashion everywhere so you don’t feel out of place when you dress up a little bit.

“There an expectation that everyone dresses well, so you don’t get away with dressing poorly.”

Jamal Wainwright’s holiday suitcase includes a lot of beach and casual wear.

“I tend to like to go to either an island or a hot destination,” the 42-year-old said.

“I like beach destinations, unless I’m going somewhere and want to go shopping in New York or somewhere like that.

“I tend to like places that are more laid-back and definitely have a party atmosphere as far as nightlife and what have you, so all you really need is some casual clothes like shorts and tank tops and flip-flops.”

His style at work is more traditional.

“I normally have on Bermuda shorts and a blazer in the summer,” he said.

“Personally [on my down time] it’s definitely more urban and more trendy. I’m a jeans and T-shirt or tank top kind of guy. I wear Jordans.

“People will see me outside of work and have to do a double-take because they can’t believe it’s me. I look so much more laid-back.”

He gets most of his fashion inspiration online — new trends on Instagram or pieces worn by friends from Atlanta and New York. He then tries them out for himself.

L’Tanya Tucker’s vacation must-haves would include a light concealer “to keep [my] skin looking flawless”, extra cash in case she decides to go shopping, and hoop earrings.

“I usually go for small hoops because they’re elegant and I don’t want my accessories to be too dramatic,” she said.

“I prefer to keep it simple.”

At work, the banker’s style tends to be quite conservative but stylish.

She gets inspired by looking at what the younger women in her family are wearing.

“I look out for nice things they have on, but at the same time I don’t want to dress too young,” said Ms Tucker, who is in her 40s. “I also like TV shows like What Not To Wear and a lot of makeover programmes.”

Melissa Gillett, an executive assistant in her 30s, tends to wear a lot of animal prints.

“It’s professional, but also anything that I can match with an animal print is the way to go for me, whether it’s shoes and dresses or a bag,” she said.

“I don’t know why, but it’s been that way since I was young. I just gravitate towards that print.”

She does not get inspired by fashion magazines or looking online, but keeps an eye out for pieces that catch her attention in stores. “There are also times when I want something in particular, like a dress for a special occasion, then I will look up dresses until I find something I like. Then I get that.”

Before heading on vacation, the one thing she always packs is a pashmina. “It’s so versatile,” she said. “You can take it to the beach and wear it as a cover-up or you can wear it at night if you get cold.

“Heels are also essential because they just go with everything. You can wear them with shorts in the day or a dress for dinner or wherever. They’re also easy to pair up.

“I also carry sunshades, sunscreen and bronzer. The glasses, because you need them to go on vacation if there is going to be sun.

“I always put lots of sunscreen on my face just to protect my skin. I also carry bronzer because it gives you a nice glow without the damaging effects from the rays of the sun.”
