A variety of recipes that “tell a story” are reflected in a cookbook launched by the Bermuda College.

Food is Family: The Bermuda College Cookbook, a commemorative project that coincides with the institution’s 50th anniversary, brings together recipes, memories and cultural traditions contributed by students, staff, alumni, retirees and friends of the institution.

It said the idea behind the project originated in 2017 through the student group WOMYN — Well-Educated, Open-Minded, Modern, Young and Noble.

The group envisioned a project that would reflect the heart of the college community, and the institution said what began as a student initiative “has grown into a rich, collaborative tribute to the people who have shaped the college across five decades”.

The college said the book was more than a collection of recipes, but rather it “celebrates the ways food connects us, preserves memory and strengthens communities”.

The institution said the cookbook’s dedication honours the late Anita Thompson, a cherished 30-year employee whose warmth and service helped to build the foundation of the college.

It added: “Her legacy continues through her daughter — a long-serving Bermuda College staff member — who grew up on campus from the age of 3 and later helped steward the completion of the cookbook.

“Their story echoes the multigenerational connection so many Bermudians share with the college.”

A spokeswoman for the cookbook committee said: “This cookbook reflects the spirit of Bermuda College — our history, our diversity and our sense of family.

“Each recipe tells a story and together they create a portrait of who we are as a community.”

Proceeds from the sale of the book will support student scholarships and book awards that the college said will further strengthen its commitment to student success and access to higher education.
