Nahki Wells up for crunch Championship finale
Nahki Wells, the Bristol City striker, is backing his team to deliver when they host Preston North End at Ashton Gate on the final day of the Sky Bet Championship campaign today.
There is much at stake for both teams as the Robins are seeking to clinch a spot in the promotion play-off while the visiting Lilywhites are attempting to avoid relegation.
It is an intriguing scenario that has all the ingredients for an explosive contest which Wells believes his team is capable of coming away from with the desired outcome. But he isn’t taking the visitors for granted.
“We’ve got ourselves in a great position and it’s essentially a final for us,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“We are playing against Preston, a side fighting for their lives because there's something on the line for them as well. They could go down so we have to really be at our best.
“We have a lot of faith in ourselves and I am excited and looking forward to it. I've always said these moments don’t come around for ever so cherish them and give our best.
“We're just looking forward to going out there and putting on a solid performance; a hard shift and do whatever it takes to get the team the three points.”
Liam Manning’s team are fifth in the Championship, one point clear of sixth and seventh place Coventry City and Millwall, with Blackburn Rovers a farther two points back and Middlesbrough three.
Preston are in 20th position, one point clear of the bottom three, heading into the final day of the season with their Championship status in jeopardy. They have also failed to win their last five matches away to the Robins since a 1-0 victory in November 2018.
Victory for the Robins would seal a spot in the Championship play-off for the first time since 2007-08, but failure to collect all three points would force them to rely on results elsewhere to go their way.
“A win secures us a play-off position regardless what's going on around us,” Wells said.
“It's a lot of variables but we want to focus on ourselves and hopefully we can go out there and do enough to get the result.”
City have already missed two chances to secure a play-off spot having suffered back-to-back losses away to Luton Town and Leeds United.
“We would have liked to have sealed it by now in our last two performances but we were unable to secure that play-off position and it comes down to the last day,” Wells said.
The Robins are coming off a humbling 4-0 defeat against leaders Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday.
“We've come off the back of a tough result but have galvanised ourselves; dusted ourselves down, analysed and prepared well for tomorrow’s test,” Wells said.
The 34-year-old and former Bermuda captain is no stranger to the promotion play-off scene after competing in them with former clubs Bradford City and Huddersfield Town.
“I've been through something similar to this so I wouldn't say it's foreign to myself. It's been a long time and to have something really significant on the line is a lot of pressure for us,” he said.
“But these are times where pressure busts pipes and hopefully we have the ability and capacity to deal with everything that comes with it and put on a performance.”
Wells, who is expected to retain his place in Manning’s starting XI, has ten goals under his belt and hopes to add to his tally playing in front of the home crowd.
“It would be nice to cap it off with a goal and some kind of impact on the game, and hopefully we can do what we have to do," he said.
