Nahki Wells’s season was brought to an end after Bristol City were defeated by Sheffield United in the Sky Bet Championship semi-final on Monday.

City needed to overturn a three-goal deficit from the home leg in the return match at Brammall Lane and started brightly with Wells forcing the goalkeeper into a save with a shot from outside the box in the opening 15 minutes.

But any chance of a City comeback was snuffed out in the 41st minute when striker Kieffer Moore put Sheffield United ahead. Further goals in the second half from Gustavo Hamer and Callum O’Hare gave Sheffield United a 6-0 aggregate victory as they progressed comfortably to the play-off final.

After the second heavy defeat in five days, City coach Liam Manning vowed to learn from the losses.

“I’m hugely proud of the lads for what they’ve done this year and tonight has to be a lesson for us,”he said.

“Credit to the players, staff and the fans were phenomenal again in terms of travelling all this way knowing it’s such a difficult one.

“I think everyone's created that buzz around the club and everybody should be proud of what we’ve done. Of course there's things we can get better at but we’ve made huge progress in the past 18 months.”

The defeat by Sheffield United could have been Wells’s last for Bristol City with no news yet on whether the Bermudian forward will sign a new deal with his contract expiring at the end of the season.
