Kyle Lightbourne walks away from Dandy Town

Short-lived marriage: Kyle Lightbourne, right, signs on the dotted line with Western Stars president Devarr Boyles almost a year to the day on May 15, 2024

Kyle Lightbourne has resigned as head coach of Dandy Town after just one season in charge.

The former national coach returned to the sidelines last summer after a spell out of the game and guided his side to Friendship Trophy success after they beat PHC 3-1 in the final at Somerset Cricket Club on New Year’s Day.

After the game, Lightbourne described his feelings at winning the trophy after a few months at the helm.

“It’s such a great feeling to win my first trophy with the club in my first season,” Lightbourne told The Royal Gazette.

But just over four months later Lightbourne has walked away, with Western Stars Sports Club releasing a statement on his departure.

“Following a brief discussion with Kyle Lightbourne, Kyle has made the decision to tender his resignation as senior head coach with immediate effect,” the statement read.

“WSSC has accepted his resignation. WSSC are appreciative of the 2024-25 season completed by the coaching staff, led by Kyle. We now begin the process of building a new coaching team for the 2025-26 season.”

For much of the season it appeared as if Dandy Town would challenge for the Premier Division title under Lightbourne, who counted on former St George’s coach Jarreau Hayward as his assistant.

However, a string of poor results towards the end of the season resulted in them dropping from the upper half of the table at the beginning of March to finishing seventh.
