‘Hopefully it’s not my last game for Bristol City’

Nahki Wells has expressed his desire to remain at Bristol City beyond his present deal, which expires this summer.

The Bermuda striker is coming off a brilliant campaign in the Sky Bet Championship, scoring ten goals and providing four assists in 39 league appearances.

While his future at the club is uncertain, Wells spoke of his desire to remain at Ashton Gate heading into the Robins’ play-off semi-final, second leg away to Sheffield United on Monday.

“Hopefully, God willing, it’s not my last game for Bristol City, but at the minute that is the case,” he told Bristol Live.

“It’s clear to everyone that my future is very uncertain at the moment. I don’t know what’s going on. The club might, but we’ll cross that bridge when we do.”

The 34-year-old’s season was brought to an end after City’s 6-0 aggregate loss to the Blades in the play-off semi-final.

After a second straight 3-0 loss at Bramall Lane on Monday, Manning insisted he hasn’t changed his stance on retaining the former Bermuda captain’s services beyond his present deal.

“I've made it quite clear my stance and what I think, but ultimately it now kind of is one where the discussions need to happen to come to a conclusion of what it looks like,“ he told Bristol Live.

“Budgets play a big part. I think where we’re at the stage now, now that the season is done.

“I think finalising those, what they look like and the impact that has on what we’re able to do and what the business looks like in the summer, that kind of kicks into gear.”

Manning initially expressed his desire to retain Wells’s services after the experienced striker notched the Robins’ winner in a 2-1 home victory over Norwich City.

“I would like to keep him,” he told reporters during the post-match press conference.

“We’ve been in touch with his agent and Brian [Tinnion, the City technical director] is speaking with the agent.

“He’s had a fantastic season when you look at his contribution and what he brings to the group. He’s the only one we’ve got over the age of 30, which is important as well.

“He’s hugely instrumental in some of the stuff behind the scenes, keeping people on track, focused, holding people accountable, the personality he brings and the standard he sets. You only have to look at his physical condition to see how well he looks after himself.”
