Kane Crichlow steps up level to sign for Sutton United
Kane Crichlow is looking forward to helping new club Sutton United achieve their goals as he makes the step up to the Vanarama National League.
The 24-year-old Bermuda forward has joined the club from National League South outfit Chelmsford City after agreeing to the terms of a two-year deal, with his new team playing in the fifth tier of English football.
“I’m excited for the move and for the new challenge ahead,” Crichlow told The Royal Gazette.
“I’ve had some good chats with the manager and I’m excited to get started in preseason.
“I hope I can help us reach our goals and I can continue my goal scoring in the season to come. I know the club were in League Two not too long ago, so it would be great to get back there during my time at the club.”
Sutton, who finished twelfth in the National League this season, were keen to acquire Crichlow’s services after his one-year deal with Chelmsford expired at the end of the campaign.
“It wasn’t a hard decision to make,” Crichlow said. “They approached my agent about my situation and they were really keen to have me in and help the club push for their goals in the season to come.
Crichlow is determined to play at the highest level he can and is looking forward to testing himself.
“I’m happier that I’m playing a step higher,” he said.
“That was the goal I wanted to achieve and hopefully I can keep progressing from here. It’s higher then where I was this past season, so I’m sure it’ll be more competitive. I will need to relocate from Essex to South London so my journey to the training ground can be easier.”
Crichlow joined Chelmsford in July 2024 and is coming off a fantastic season with the club in which he finished as their joint-top scorer with 13 goals alongside Charlie Ruff, and was their only player to have netted a hat-trick during the campaign.
His outstanding exploits on the pitch earned him a clean sweep of the top honours for the National League South team as he picked up the players’ player of the season, manager Robbie Simpson’s player of the season and the supporters’ player of the season awards.
Crichlow began his career in Spain at UE Cornellà before embarking on playing stints with various clubs in England, including AFC Wimbledon and Watford, and also suiting up for Greek Super League 2 side Episkopis.
He has also thrived lately playing with the national team, scoring the opening goal in Bermuda’s 5-3 loss to Honduras in the Concacaf Gold Cup preliminary round play-off first leg at Flora Duffy Stadium in March.
Crichlow was expected to be involved in the island’s crucial 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Cayman Islands and Cuba next month, but has ruled himself out.
“Unfortunately, I won’t be available for this international window, but I’m wishing the team and staff all the best and hopefully we can get some good results,” he said.
