Bermuda midfielder Willie Clemons has signed for English Southern League Premier Division Central side Leiston.

Clemons, 30, who was previously with Felixstowe & Walton United, became the first summer signing for the team who play in the seventh tier of English football.

“I’m happy to finally get it sorted,” Clemons said.

“I’ve been familiar with the club for a while now. I almost came here a couple of years ago but ended up at Braintree. Leiston is a good club and I’ve always admired it from afar. I can’t wait to get going.

“The ground is looking good, the pitch at Leiston has always been one of the best to play on. I’m looking forward to it.”

Clemons, with 33 caps and three goals for Bermuda, has promised silverware at Victory Road, having previously earned promotion to the National League with Braintree.

“I would hope to say they can expect a good bit of quality from me,” he said.

“A bit of excitement, something to put a smile on your face with obviously plenty of wins and trophies.”

Leiston coach Chris Wigger and head of football Strategy Darren Eadie were on hand to greet Clemons at the Watson & Hillhouse Stadium, with Wigger excited about finally securing Clemons, a player they have been pursuing for a while.

“I think the first signing of a close season is always an exciting one,” the coach said.

“You always have your targets and getting that first one over the line, as we have with Willie, is very important to us.

“We tried to sign him a couple of years ago. He felt at the time his future lay with Braintree, and he ended up having a very successful time with their promotion success.

“He’s an attacking, dynamic player and it’s an exciting one for the fans. It’s good to secure Willie, and we’re already looking forward to the start of the season.”
