Bermuda Under-23 coach John Barry Nusum is optimistic in the final countdown to the International Island Games in Orkney, Scotland.

The former Bermuda forward feels good about the make-up of his squad and their chances of success at the event to be held from July 12 to 18.

“We are looking forward to competing in the Island Games this year,” he said. “We are travelling with a young team full of potential and are ready to see them rise to the occasion in a men’s tournament.

“Players like Adrian Trott and Caleb McDowall will be leaned on for their experience in their second Island Games, while youth players like Khari Sharrieff and Brighton Morrison will look to add a spark.”

Nusum’s squad also includes Harborough Town under-23 midfielder Jakeem Jennings and University of Dayton striker Andrew Armstrong, who are both coming off impressive seasons with their teams.

Jennings helped the Bees lift the Midland Football League Challenge Trophy while Armstrong earned the Golden Boot and Rookie of the Year honours as he and his Flyers team-mates were crowned Atlantic 10 Conference champions.

Bermuda will launch their men’s campaign against Western Isles on July 13.

Also flying the Bermuda banner in Orkney is the senior women’s team with coach Naquita Robinson also optimistic her players can rise to the challenge as they attempt to defend their crown.

“Team selection has been a challenge with players initially available and then unavailable at the last minute," she said. “However, I am confident in the players that are travelling to do the job.”

Robinson said her players were up for their title defence.

“Obviously, we have a huge target on our backs but we are ready for it,” she said. “The players understand what is required and we just hope everyone can stay healthy throughout the tournament.”

Among the noticeable absentees from Robinson’s squad is Bournemouth midfielder Kenni Thompson.

The senior national women’s team launch their title defence against Jersey on July 13.
