Nahki Wells: I’m all in for World Cup qualifiers

Bermuda’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup have received a massive boost after former captain Nahki Wells announced his intention to play in the crucial matches.

There are less than two months until Jamaica visit the island for the first game in the final stage of qualifying, with Bermuda potentially just six matches away from securing a spot at the World Cup for the first time.

Wells, who recently joined Luton Town after his contract expired at Bristol City, is looking forward to wearing the Bermuda jersey again as the Gombey Warriors look to make history.

“I am all in for the World Cup qualifiers and will be available for September's fixtures,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“I’m looking forward to being back at home and playing in front of our people in a few significant matches and hopefully we can have a chance of getting to the World Cup.

“I will look to get off to a flyer in the league with Luton, get up and running and be in a good place come the first international break.”

Bermuda advanced to this stage with a brilliant 2-1 away victory against Cuba last month.

The win meant Michael Findlay’s team leapfrogged their hosts to finish second in their group behind Honduras, with their reward home and away matches against the Reggae Boyz, Curaçao and Trinidad & Tobago across three international windows from September to November.

Wells, who has scored 20 goals in 26 appearances for the Gombey Warriors, knows Bermuda’s task will not be easy but believes the team is capable of causing a shock or two.

“It would be no small feat but miracles can happen, and that's how we're looking at it,” he said.

“I think we will be fully prepared to take on the challenge of trying to better those other three sides in our group. It will be tough, but why not dream?”

Nahki Wells makes his first appearance in a Luton Town shirt in Slovenia

The 35-year-old has spent the week in Central Europe as part of a training camp with Luton, and played 30 minutes in an 8-1 win over Slovenian second-tier team NK Triglav Kranj on Saturday as Matt Bloomfield’s team rounded off a productive week.

National coach Michael Findlay is likely to have a few selection dilemmas ahead of the upcoming qualifiers, with forward Justin Donawa also announcing his intention to return to the Bermuda set-up.

Donawa was not involved in recent international windows as a result of commitments with club side Brackley Town, who were promoted to the Vanarama National League, the fifth tier of English football.

“I am excited and looking forward to possibly being involved in the fall and helping us reach new heights as a country,” he said.
