Danté Leverock returns for Bermuda World Cup qualifiers
Central defender Danté Leverock is back in the Bermuda squad for the World Cup qualifying matches against Jamaica and Curaçao.
Leverock has been out injured since February, when he limped off with a heavily strapped left leg in the second half of Dandy Town’s Premier Division encounter with Devonshire Colts.
The 33-year-old missed the Concacaf Gold Cup preliminary round matches against Honduras and the wins over Cayman Islands and Cuba to book their spot in the decisive round of the World Cup qualifiers.
Also back in the squad is Justin Donawa. He has not played a part in recent international windows as a result of club commitments with Brackley Town, who were recently promoted to the Vanarama National League, the fifth tier of English football.
Bermuda play Jamaica at home on September 5, before they take on Curaçao away four days later.
Commenting on the team selection, coach Michael Findlay, who will be without the injured Kole Hall, expressed delight in the availability of most of the players.
“These are extremely exciting times for the Bermudian Football Association,’’ the coach said.
“We enter the final round of Fifa 2026 World Cup qualifying, which is uncharted territory for our programme.
“We are pleased to be able to have 99 per cent of players available for consideration. This is a testament to the players, their performances on the international stage and within their club atmospheres and the internal competition they have created which provided an important dilemma for the staff in our selection process.
“We are very pleased with the depth and quality of the squad who begin the challenge of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
“They bring both the experience and the youth we are looking for in our squads with the inclusion of players like Nahki Wells, Lejaun Simmons, Willie Clemons and Zeiko Lewis, who have seen international football at the highest level.
“But also we are able to continue to integrate players like Deniche Hill, Jutorre Burgess, Aunde Todd and Harry Twite into this programme, which serves us well for these matches and the future of Bermuda's national team.”
“It is unfortunate that we will be without Kole Hall due to injury and we wish him a speedy recovery. But this is also one of the reasons for the continued expansion of our long list of players.”
Meanwhile, as excitement continues to grow ahead of the showdown with Jamaica, the Bermuda Football Association has set aside Friday as Jersey Day.
Bermudians are being urged to wear their pink and blue national colours. The jerseys can be purchased from the Bermuda Football Association offices (Frog Lane), Sidekicks (Dockyard), Lookie Lookie (Washington Mall) and Pro Shop (Reid Street).
Jamaica coach Steve McClaren is expected to announce the Reggae Boyz squad on Friday.
Premier League stars such as Leon Bailey and Michail Antonio are expected to be part of the Jamaican team for the trip to Bermuda.
