PHC and St George’s primed for tasty league opener
Dandy Town, St George’s Colts and PHC Zebras will attempt to preserve their unblemished starts to the season as the opening round of the Premier Division continues this weekend.
Hornets, who are also through to last four in the Dudley Eve Trophy, are the firm favourites heading into their clash with Young Men’s Social Club at Police Field tomorrow. However, coach Jarreau Hayward isn’t taking the home team for granted.
“Social Club will be a tough ask on a tricky field. They have quality in the spine and excellent coaching, so we will have to be at our best,” Hayward told The Royal Gazette.
“This season there will be no easy games. From my lens, everyone looks hungry and everyone looks equipped.
“With that said, it’s the season opener, and we have a long way to go in our process and our season. We’ll see what happens.”
Town are off to a flyer, having won all four of their matches to date in the Charity Cup and Dudley Eve Trophy, while Bluebirds were beaten in their group matches in the latter competition and still search for a first win of the season.
PHC will host fellow unbeaten side St George’s in tomorrow’s match of the day at PHC Field.
Both teams went unbeaten in their Dudley Eve Trophy group matches en route to reaching the semi-finals and will no doubt be looking to carry that form forward.
PHC coach Cecoy Robinson is looking for a solid performance from his players on their home patch.
“Sunday is the start of the league and we need to fight at home,” he said. “St George’s have been good, so we have to concentrate for 90 minutes.
“The players are up for it, so it should be an exciting game.”
Tomorrow’s remaining Premier Division match-up will see Paget Lions hosting promoted X-Roads Warriors at Southampton Oval.
Both teams failed to progress from the Dudley Eve Trophy group stage and will no doubt look to bounce back.
Lions captain Diaje Hart said his team are determined to build upon last season’s fourth-place finish.
“Our team have shown their hunger in previous years and we can’t wait to do better than last year,” he said.
X-Roads talisman Donovan Thompson said the visiting side are keen to come away from the clash with maximum points.
“We are just looking to get over the line and get three points,” he said.
Tomorrow’s fixtures kick off at 3pm.
• The scheduled match between Devonshire Cougars and Boulevard has been postponed, the Bermuda Football Association announced yesterday.
The match was due to be at Goose Gosling Field tonight at 9pm, but the governing body has learnt that the ground has been closed until further notice.
A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.
