Bernard Park brawlers punished by clubs
North Village and Devonshire Colts may be without the services of two key players when the league campaign resumes after the international break.
Village’s Jalen Harvey and Colts’ Jahzardae Samuels have been dealt with by their clubs for their involvement in a brawl that marred the opening game of the Premier Division season at Bernard Park two weeks ago.
Harvey, a regular in the Bermuda defence during the glorious 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup run, has been provisionally suspended for six games for bringing the September 26 contest into disrepute, while it is understood Samuels has been given a punishment of indeterminate length by Colts for his part in the incident.
Neither player was named by their clubs, but The Royal Gazette can reveal their identities on good authority.
In a statement, North Village announced that they have imposed disciplinary action.
“Following an internal investigation, North Village Community Club confirms that disciplinary action has been taken against a player for conduct that brought the game into disrepute during the league opener at Bernard Park on September 26 between North Village Community Club and Devonshire Colts,” the statement read. “The player has been issued a six-match suspension, which is consistent with the Bermuda Football Association’s Code of Conduct and its related sanctioning guidelines.
“His sanction will be suspended until the BFA has handed down its own disciplinary measures so that both sanctions may run concurrently. This approach ensures fairness and avoids the player being penalised twice for the same incident.”
Devonshire Colts have yet to announce whether they have taken disciplinary action against any of their players.
Violent clashes took place between players from both teams and some fans in the minutes after Colts’ 2-1 victory, with one person who had allegedly attempted to play peacemaker knocked unconscious.
Police were summoned to the ground.
Both clubs apologised for the brawl, which was condemned by the Bermuda Football Association. The investigation by the local governing body remains under way.
