Robin Hood advanced into the next round of the FA Cup after beating Southampton Rangers in a penalty shoot-out involving two former FA Cup winners.

After Rangers substitute Jahir Smith missed, Hood captain Sami Carolo kept his composure to bury his team’s seventh penalty beyond Rangers’ goalkeeper Chejon Berkeley

The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 at the end of extra time, with new Hood coach Sergio Goater delighted to come out on top in the battle between two First Division promotion contenders.

“It was a tough match today,” Goater said. “This was a typical Cup game which went down to the wire. Fitness took its toll as you could see players from both teams suffering with cramp, but at the end of the day our name is in the hat and we are looking forward to the next round.”

It took just one minute of the 120 for Rangers to open the scoring. After intercepting the Hood kick-off, the ball was played long for Jahni Bean to run on to and slam pass Hood goalkeeper Barrington Gooden as he scrambled to get into position.

Hood settled, despite this early setback, with captain Carolo showing finesse throughout the match and instrumental in most of their threatening attacks.

Near the half-hour mark, his free kick went just beyond the outstretched boot of Keishen Bean in his attempt to level the score, while at the other end, goalscorer Bean’s glancing header from an Ellington Weldon cross went inches wide.

Just before the interval, Berkeley would protect his team’s one-goal lead when he advanced to make a save with his feet after Tokia Bean had been put through.

Rangers pressed to double their lead at the start of the second half and almost capitalised on some sloppy Hood defending, which allowed Bean to pick up the loose ball and get off a firm drive which Gooden pushed wide for a corner.

Fatigue started to set in as players from both teams would go down with cramp.

With time running down, Hood picked up the intensity and started to dominate possession. A good build-up involving six passes resulted in Tokia Bean squaring the ball across the goalmouth untouched.

The Hood combination of Keishen Bean and Carolo was threatening throughout the match and contributed to levelling the score in the dying stages of regulation time. Carolo’s perfectly weighted pass found Bean, which forced the Rangers goalkeeper to advance but he could only block the shot with the loose ball falling to Taurean Manders, who remained calm to hit a low drive into the empty net.

Rangers should have sealed the match with the last kick of regulation time when captain Donte Brangman’s cross was aimed towards Jahni Bean and substitute Daischon Chin who were unmarked at the back post. But the two would miscommunicate with both attempting to shoot and the ball sliced wide from within the six-yard box to leave players and spectators bewildered as the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Hood took the lead in the first period of extra time with Bean and Carolo again taking centre stage. Carolo’s precision pass was played into space to find Bean, who kept his composure to curl a right-foot shot over goalkeeper Berkeley’s head into the left corner of the net.

Not to be outdone, Rangers would tie the match three minutes later when substitute Ralston Wright rose highest at the back post to place a firm header into the roof of the net beyond Gooden.

With the match tied at 2-2 at the end of extra time, substitute Smith missed his team’s seventh kick as Hood’s marksmen scored all of theirs, including a three-times taken penalty from Keishen Bean.
