Corona League teams celebrate cup shocks
Upsets were the order of the weekend as a trio of Corona League teams toppled First Division opponents in the FA Cup preliminary round weekend.
Inter Bermuda got the ball rolling when they came from two goals down to hosts Somerset Eagles 3-2 in a five-goal thriller at White Hill Field last Saturday.
Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 advantage through strikes from Zeiko Saltus-Seymour (45+3) and Yizharyha Williams (54) and appeared to be in control of the tie until the away side mounted a late fightback and scored three unanswered goals.
Nuno Ponte pulled one back for Inter Bermuda in the 71st minute to shave the deficit in half and it was game on when Roy McKitrick equalised four minutes later.
With extra time looming, Ponte scored his second goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time to complete his team’s impressive fightback and secure their passage through to the next round.
Joining them are Corona League rivals FC Rhino and Young Gunz Sound FC who also upstaged First Division opponents.
FC Rhino left it until late to edge Wolves 1-0 in the first game of a double header at Southampton Oval on Sunday thanks to Keith Jennings’s 77th minute winner.
Elsewhere on Sunday Young Gunz came from behind twice to see off hosts St David’s Warriors at Lords.
Drewonde Bascome (36), Rico Wells (65) and substitute Dion Stovell (90+3) were on target for the visitors while St David’s replied through Tre McCallan (27) and Tyrone Burgess (55 pen).
Island Bulls are the other Corona League side through to the next round of the FA Cup after receiving a bye when First Division opponents Hamilton Parish pulled out citing a lack of match fitness.
The remaining FA Cup preliminary round fixtures featured Robin Hood beating First Division rivals Southampton Rangers on penalties at Southampton Oval and nine-times champions Somerset Trojans thrashing Corona League outfit Terrace Onions 1 at Somerset Cricket Club.
