There were mixed fortunes for the two Bermudians playing in League One in England on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Nathan Trott helped his Cardiff City side leap to the top of the division after a 2-1 win over Leyton Orient, but Nahki Wells missed a penalty and gave the ball away in his own half, which led to a goal, as Luton lost 2-0 at home to Mansfield Town.

Wells, who missed Bermuda’s game against Jamaica on Tuesday after a death in the family, would have gone into the match against Mansfield hoping to impress Jack Wilshere, who was appointed as Luton’s head coach during the international window after the sacking of Matt Bloomfield.

Wilshere, at 33, two years younger than the Bermudian, named Wells in his first starting line-up and the forward had the perfect opportunity to make his mark when stepping up to take a penalty in the 33rd minute after Jordan Clark had been fouled by Kyle Knoyle.

Wells opted to fire low with power but goalkeeper Liam Roberts dived to his right and the ball got stuck under his body, leaving Wells shouting in frustration.

The day was to get worse for the striker just seven minutes later when he gave the ball away in his own half and Rhys Oates smashed the ball into the net from outside the box to give Mansfield the lead.

Mansfield scored again in the 59th minute through a Tyler Roberts penalty with Wells substituted immediately after. The result leaves Luton, preseason favourites to win League One, in fourteenth on 16 points.

That is ten points off league leaders Cardiff, who returned to the top of the division after beating Reading 2-1 largely thanks to another inspired display by Trott.

The goalkeeper was called into action on a number of occasions, including midway through the first half when he made a superb one-on-one save from Paddy Lane to keep the score level at 0-0.

Reading took the lead in the 38th minute through Lewis Wing’s powerful low shot and went in 1-0 up at half time.

Trott was called into action early in the second half as Jack Marriott was played through on goal, but the goalkeeper denied the forward with an outstretched leg.

Cardiff equalised in the 49th minute through Omari Kellyman but almost immediately the Bluebirds were indebted to Trott as he produced a diving save to keep out Matt Richie’s near post-strike.

The turnaround was completed in the 65th minute when Yousef Salech gave Cardiff the lead but Trott was still needed to preserve the victory. Late in the game he was called into action, firstly denying Welshman Charlie Savage from distance and then smartly keeping out Marriott’s effort from close range.
