St George’s fan Jarreau Hayward eyes Dudley Eve Trophy final

Plotting former team’s downfall: Dandy Town coach Jarreau Hayward (File photograph)

Dandy Town coach Jarreau Hayward will be trying not to show any emotion when his side takes on St George’s Colts in the Dudley Eve Trophy semi-finals at Bernard Park tonight (9pm).

Hayward, who played for St George’s from the youth academy right up to the senior team before leading the club to FA Cup glory as coach, is determined to send Town to the final.

“It’ll be a good game but I think all the emotion is out of it at this point,” Hayward told The Royal Gazette.

“I already faced them last year as an assistant coach and I'm still a fan of St George's. I’m still the head of building and grounds at St George’s, but when it comes to football, my focus is 100 per cent on Dandy Town.

“I don't look at it as denying St George’s a chance to play in the final, I look at it as progressing Dandy Town.

“It just happens that our next opponent is St George's. So, if it was any other team, we would approach it the exact same way.

“We just have to follow our processes and hopefully, we get the desired result. But I know St George’s will be ready, they have a lot of talent in the team and they are well coached by Drewonde Bascome.”

Hayward played with and coached the bulk of the St George’s players, which makes coming up with a game plan a bit easier.

On Sunday, he got a sneak peek into his semi-final opponents when they lost 2-1 to Paget Lions at Wellington Oval.

“I would say I’ve worked closely with 80 to 85 per cent of the team,” he said.

“I’ve played with some of them so, yeah, I still have a lot of connections with the team and obviously with the club itself. The recruits are really good and they’re gelling well. I saw them play Paget the other day.

“We just have to stick to our game plan, follow our general principles and just show up ready to play.

“St George’s have some really talented players. We have to be worried about just making sure we play our game.

“All I really want to see is us apply ourselves to our general principles, come to work hard, after that, we'll see where the chips fall.”

Defender Lejaun Simmons is expected to return for Town after missing the Premier Division encounter with PHC on Friday.

“He [Simmons] was still recovering from the Jamaica game but is available for the semi-final,” the Town coach added.

“I think we only have one player that's injured right now. That's Antonio Bailey, but he is also abroad.

“Outside of that, I’m pretty sure we are in good health. Everyone, for the most part, I believe is available.”

In the earlier match starting at 7pm, PHC and Devonshire Cougars meet at the same venue where they drew 2-2 in the group stage of the competition last month.

PHC have a chance to put behind their uncharacteristically poor start to the season to give themselves a chance of winning early silverware. Cecoy Robinson’s side have picked up only four points in the league from three matches, so will be determined to find some form.

Cougars, coached by Mark Mills, have also started the league slowly with a point from two matches. They will also be without defender Llineiko Millett, who is suspended after being sent off in the league defeat by Devonshire Colts on Sunday.
