Nathan Trott into cup quarter-final with Cardiff

Nathan Trott closing in on appearance at Wembley

Nathan Trott and his Cardiff City team continued their impressive run in the Carabao Cup after beating Championship side Wrexham 2-1 on Tuesday night to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Cardiff, a league below their opponents, came out on top of the Welsh derby courtesy of strikes from Yousef Salech and Will Fish. Kieffer Moore scored for Wrexham.

Trott had a relatively quiet night between the post, positioning himself well to gather substitute Ryan Hardie’s header from a free kick and also denying the Scot after going through on goal in the second half.

Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy hailed his player’s efforts before a crowd of 10,563 in hostile territory at The Racecourse.

“It was a very satisfying evening and we handled ourselves well throughout the game,” the coach said on the club’s website.

“To play the way that we did throughout the course of the game in front of so many of our supporters who made the journey, it felt like a really special game. The emotion of this club means that when you’re going really well, it’s an amazing feeling.”

Cardiff drew first blood with Salech tapping in his sixth goal of the season from close range to give the League One side a deserved lead in the thirteenth minute.

They should have extended their advantage before the interval with Omari Kellyman, Rubin Colwill and Cian Ashford squandering chances which they were made to rue when forme Cardiff forward Moore headed home to level the scores seven minutes into the second half.

However, Cardiff would not be denied as the unmarked Fish volleyed Joel Bagan’s deep cross in at the back post for his first goal for the club to spark wild scenes of celebration among the 1,249 fans at the away end of the stadium.

Wrexham are coached Phil Parkinson, who led Bradford City and Bermudian striker Nahki Wells, to the final of the competition in 2013.
