Wolfe stars as FC Bascome win Leonard DeRosa-Holder final
FC Bascome 3 PHC 1
FC Bascome captain Juan Wolfe scored twice to lead his side to a 3-1 triumph over PHC Zebras in the Leonard DeRosa-Holder Under-15 Final, which was played before the Dudley Eve Final at Devonshire Rec on Sunday.
FC Bascome took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break courtesy of Wolfe’s left-foot strike in the nineteenth minute in a half in which both defences held firm and gave little opportunities away. Wolfe did well to keep his composure to hit a firm drive with his weaker foot beyond PHC goalkeeper Dunstan DeSa after picking up a diagonal cross from the right side.
PHC upped the tempo from the opening whistle in the second half, penetrating down their left flank. Ta’han Eve made a darting run before crossing but the ball would roll untouched across the goalmouth.
Minutes later, Akshay Townsend created another golden opportunity for PHC to equalise when his low cross slipped through the legs of FC Bascome goalkeeper NiJasz Mello, but the ball was cleared to safety before it could cross the line.
Bascome’s defender Kyron Bryan then made a desperate tackle to knock the ball away from PHC captain Amir Weller’s boot as he shaped to shoot to keep the lead intact.
PHC’s perseverance paid off when they levelled the scores in the 64th minute. Azai Dyer received a pass and shot for goal only for Bryan to slice the ball into his own net in his attempted clearance.
Two minutes later, Wolfe put his side ahead for good from the penalty spot after sending DeSa the wrong way.
Substitute Adan O’Brien should have given FC Bascome a two-goal cushion but he shot wide from a good position after being put through. However, they extended their lead in the 73rd minute when Cairo Burgess met Remi Furbert’s low cross to plant his shot beyond the flat-footed goalkeeper.
Shula Davis protected FC Bascome’s two-goal lead when he cleared off the line after Stephen Astwood rounded Mello to get his goalbound shot off.
PHC’s Evan Hayward was named MVP for his team, with Braylon Browne picking up that personal award for Bascome.
