Reggie Lambe is hoping to go out with a flourish in his last home match for Bermuda.

When the island’s most capped player steps on to the pitch against Curaçao at Flora Duffy Stadium tonight (8pm), it will be his final time gracing home turf as a player, with his last game expected to come away to Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday.

Lambe, 34, has made no secret of his desire to go out on a high and was hoping that Bermuda would still harbour hopes of qualifying for the World Cup with two games to go.

“The campaign hasn’t really gone according to plan,” Lambe said.

“But we really want that win. We want to show that it's not a fluke that we're here and that we can compete with these teams.

“For us to get a draw or nick a win will be very beneficial for us, confidence-wise, to know we belong at this stage with these teams.”

Going into his last home match Lambe is sentimental as he reflects on a career that started in 2007, when he made his debut against St Kitts & Nevis at the age of 16.

“It’s very emotional for me and I’m not really ready to call it quits, but I think it's the right time for me,” he said.

“I thought I’d like to end my international career on a high and look back on my career and see how I’ve helped progress the national team.

“I know that some of the home fans have followed my career and I’ve got family who live here and who are coming to the game. I want to go out into the crowd and individually speak to people to show appreciation for everyone who supported me throughout my years.”

Lambe insists that Bermuda now have a new crop of players that can take the national team forward and is urging the local crowd to continue to back the team.

“I just want the fans to keep following and supporting Bermuda, regardless if we play a lower-ranked team than us or a higher-ranked team,” he said.

“I think people are starting to see where the journey can take us and see what Bermuda can do. The only thing I expect from the fans is for them to keep supporting, keep coming out, showing the youth love and keep supporting national teams, whether it’s the football team, the women's team, or field hockey team.

“We have some very good new players coming up and a good squad. A lot of other countries think that they’re far superior to us, but we have a lot of youth coming through that can keep us in that competitive edge.

“We have to make sure that we get to tournaments such as the Gold Cup. Hopefully in the next four years we can build a team that can actually help us to get to the World Cup. That’s the main goal now.”

In advance of Lambe’s last game, Bermuda coach Michael Findlay has expressed his admiration for the veteran’s impact on and off the pitch.

“Reggie Lambe is a legend in terms of what he’s done for Bermudian football,” Findlay said.

“I had the great pleasure of giving him his 50th cap against French Guiana and there are limited players that reach that level.

“Reggie’s shown resilience and, most importantly, commitment. Since I’ve come in, he's been extremely important to us, to me and to the younger players in showing his ability to commit to wanting to be part of something.

“So it’s a great day for Reggie and a great day for Bermudian football. I hope they all celebrate him and congratulate him on his great service.

“Reggie has shown that he still enjoys his football, which is the best part about it. He’s not just doing it because he has to do it, he's doing it because he’s enjoying it.

“Now he has decided that this is the time to step aside after our run World Cup qualifying. I think he’s chosen a great opportunity to step away and see what the next stage of his life has.”
