Southampton Rangers ban six men for assault on Paget player
Southampton Rangers Sports Club has issued bans to six individuals, including one of the club’s cricketers, for their involvement in the attempt to assault a Paget Lions player.
Darren Burchall, the Rangers president, announced that club leadership convened on Monday to make those responsible for the incident at Southampton Oval on November 23 account for their actions.
The security breach resulted in the postponement of the Premier Division fixture between Paget and Devonshire Colts.
The Royal Gazette is aware of the names of the six people banned by Rangers but have chosen not to name them to avoid jeopardising any potential prosecution. Burchall has also passed the names to the Bermuda Football Association, which has in its power the ability to issue banning orders preventing those involved from entering any of the football grounds on island when matches are played.
“We held a disciplinary hearing on Monday to review the incident that occurred at our ground prior to the Paget versus Devonshire Colts match on November 23,” Burchall said.
“We have identified the culprits and they have received suspensions from our club. Three of the guys got two years, the other three are banned for life, which will be reviewed after five years.
“What follows now is that we will send them registered letters and the copies are given to the police. If they come to Southampton Rangers Sports Club, police are called in and they’ll be charged with trespassing.
“I think what’s important is that we’re going to work with all key stakeholders. We want to help these guys become better citizens because that’s what they need.
“They’re crying out for something, but we’ve got to take a hard stance about it. What they’ve done is completely unacceptable and we don't need that in football or in any sport.”
