Robin Hood prevail in crucial First Division clash
Robin Hood ended the first half of the First Division season with a bang after coming from behind to beat previously unbeaten Somerset Trojans 2-1 at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.
Hood were forced to chase the match after Leo Burgess put Trojans in front in the 27th minute.
The away side hit back through Sebastian Madeiros’s 36th minute equaliser before the prolific Keishen Bean popped up with the winner in the 52nd minute to secure the points, much to the delight of Hood coach Sergio Goater.
“It was definitely a big win and a big confidence boost to beat Somerset,” Goater told The Royal Gazette. “They are the top team, hadn’t been defeated and it was good to show my players that we’re up for that challenge and right there.”
Despite suffering their first loss of the season, Trojans remain top of the standings on goal difference over Hood with both teams on 15 points heading into the winter break.
“We are happy with the first half of the season,” said Danvers Seymour Jr, the Trojans coach.
“We’re obviously disappointed with the result but that’s football. We give credit to the opponent and we don’t take them for granted at all.
“All played an excellent game yesterday. It was really competitive and they were the better team on the day, so I give respect to Hood.”
Trojans and Hood remain on course to secure the two promotion spots available, with third place Somerset Eagles eight points adrift on seven points with Southampton Rangers, St David’s and Wolves.
In the only other second=tier match played on Sunday, St David’s edged ten-man Vasco 1-0 at Police Field, where Cody Richardson converted the winner from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute.
Aaron Lugo, the St David’s coach, was happy to see his team get the better of a hard-fought contest.
“Vasco is a hard fighting club who play with pride — and they did,” he said.
“The field conditions were not the best, but both teams had to play on it.”
St David’s gained a numerical advantage when Vasco’s Byron Correia was sent off after receiving a second booking in the 43rd minute. They capitalised on their advantage when Richardson converted the game winner from 12 yards after team-mate Vance Wall-Brown was fouled in the area in the dying stages of the match.
The remaining fixture between Rangers and Eagles at Southampton Oval was not played due to a shortage of available referees.
