Goalkeeper Nathan Trott superb in defeat against Chelsea
Nathan Trott pulled off a number of fine stops despite Cardiff exiting the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage after losing 3-1 to Chelsea on Tuesday.
Trott was at the centre of some brave resistance by the League One leaders, but their defence was eventually breached in the second half by substitutes Alejandro Garnacho, who scored twice, and Pedro Neto, with both world-class players brought on as Chelsea struggled to make the breakthrough.
In a goalless first half, Trott used his feet in the 32nd minute to block Marc Guiu’s effort in Chelsea's first shot on target, with the save ensuring that the scores were level at half time
Sensing an embarrassment, Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca rung the changes by calling on Garnacho and João Pedro at the start of the second half.
Trott made a big save to keep out Garnacho’s first-time strike in the 54th minute but there was nothing the 27-year-old could do to keep out the Argentinian just five minutes later.
Cardiff defender Dylan Lawlor gave the ball away inside his own third to Facundo Buonanotte, who fed Garnacho to slot past the Bermudian.
Trott continued to impress and pushed the ball over the bar from Buonanotte's left-foot strike just before Cardiff were given a lifeline when David Turnbull headed in Perry Ng’s cross to level the scores with 15 minutes to go.
With the passionate Cardiff support sensing an upset, Trott came off his line to deny Neto in the 78th minute, but four minutes later his goal was breached for the second time. Andrey Santos set up Neto, whose effort took a deflection off Joel Bagan to beat a despairing Trott dive.
Garnacho completed the scoring from a Pedro pass in added time.
