Devonshire Colts can take sole possession of the top spot in the Premier Division with a favourable result in their derby against Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Rec tonight (8pm).

Ray Jones’s team trail league leaders PHC Zebras on goal difference heading into the contest and need only a point to leapfrog them with a game in hand in a tight title race which promises to go down to the wire.

Colts are on a roll after going unbeaten in their previous four league matches and are high on confidence after putting previous leaders Dandy Town to the sword courtesy of a humbling 4-1 defeat away from home last time out.

The prolific Senoj Mitchell, Jahzardae Samuels (two) and Elisha Darrell were on target for Colts while David Jones Jr scored Town’s consolation.

Cougars could find their work cut out for them trying to contain a lethal Colts attack that has scored the most goals (28) in the league to date, with forward Mitchell leading the charge for the Golden Boot with ten under his belt so far.

Jones may be forced to tweak his starting eleven as defender Daniel Ball and midfielder Zuri Darrell are doubtful after picking up nasty knocks in the demolition of Hornets.

Cougars will be looking to bounce back after having their seven-game unbeaten run snapped courtesy of a 2-1 defeat away to champions North Village in their previous outing.

Domico Coddington earned Cougars a 1-0 advantage at the break before Village hit back after the restart through goals from Seke Spence and London Steede-Jackson to complete the comeback and keep their slim title hopes alive.

Cougars are fifth in the standings, eight points adrift of the leaders.

Very little separated Colts and Cougars in the first league derby between them at Police Field last October, with the home side coming from behind to edge ten-man Cougars thanks to Jorj Dublin’s 89th-minute winner.

Cougars were reduced to ten men after goalscorer Llineiko Millett was shown a straight red card seven minutes before the break.
